FLUX: SENIOR
DESIGN SHOW

Trailer for our Watkins College of Art Graphic Design Senior Show at ST8MNT on 04.27.17

The FLUX Graphic Design Show is just one of the deliverables of the senior class at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film. We produce this show along side of preparing a final portfolio for each student to be displayed at this show. The limitations: 15 weeks and $1500.

We produced a screen printed poster invite and the show. ST8MNT hosted this show in their bank vault event space—it doubles as a photostudio—we projected raw video footage of us making this image, mixed in with the FLUX footage from 8 projectors.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

This summer I worked with one of my longtime (2 years) students Ali Stevens on a project for her independent study.

“The goal of this independent study project was to mix old design methods with new to recreate posters and packaging that reflected the experimental temperament of my favorite French New Wave films. These were modeled after the Criterion Collection which is a series of important classic and contemporary films.” - ALI STEVENS

REDESIGNING HOW MAGAZINE

In my humble opinion the design of HOW Design Magazine has always, well, has always sucked. So I tasked my class with the challenge of redesigning the magazine. The deliverables were a few covers to show how the design would work across multiple issues, a table of contents, and two sample spreads.

REAL STUDIO

How do you make work that reaches the “college age” demographic? I started a class that utilized a cross section of the campus, across the Fashion, Interior, and Graphic Departments to make our work. Comprised of freshman and sophmores, we created all the design and advertising materials for O’More College of Design.

The students worked on teams to concept and then execute the work. Each team presented their ideas to the class for critique. This class delivered real work under real deadlines.

APP DESIGN

My app design class also designed real work for O’More College of Design. An app that would organize the school by student, class, teacher, and department. Students could upload work teachers could grade them and we then could take that work and data to feed social media and the O’More website, submit the best work to awards, student portfolios, and automate a slew of other tasks.

LOGO DESIGN + BRANDING

I always give the branding assignment in my Intro to Vector Imaging Class. Logos are the best way to teach a student how to use the type and pen tools. Plus I like to get them thinking about branding early.
